The IU South Bend Honors Program, in association with St. Margaret’s House, will be hosting a program called A Common Thread from 7 to 8:30 p.m on Sept. 29.

This event spotlights the mission of St. Margaret’s House through testimonies of those who are most tightly connected.

This event will be hosted in IU South Bend’s main auditorium, and the proceeds of the event will go to the work of St. Margaret’s House. The House’s mission is to provide women and children in vulnerable situations with a place to live and a community to connect with. The impact of St. Margaret’s has extended far, and the hope is to reach even more people in need through this event.

“Since its creation in 1990, it has provided countless women and children with shelter, food, and clothing, helped meet their immediate physical, spiritual, and emotional needs, gave them hope and confidence, and empowered and trained them to build a brighter future for themselves and their families,” Neovi Karakatsanis, Honors Program director, said.

IU South Bend Honors students are impacting the community by helping St. Margaret’s House in some creative ways. The Honors Freshman Seminar has been divided into teams in preparation for this event. The teams are raising awareness for the House and the event by using social media, focusing on the campus community and looking to the broader South Bend region.

Though this is IU South Bend’s first time hosting, students have often received unique opportunities in connection with St. Margaret’s. “St. Margaret’s House regularly hosts sociology, political science, honors, and other classes on its premises, giving presentations to students on such topics as housing and food insecurity, mental illness, drug addiction, social justice and much more. In addition, hundreds of students have completed service-learning and community engagement requirements there,” Karakatsanis said.

General admission to the event will cost $35 but will be only $10 for students. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a reception to follow after the performance.
