At their Feb. 21 meeting, the Student Government Association funded the Transfer Student Union’s request for an event called ‘Tea-Riffic Transfers’. The purpose of this event is to welcome transfer students and help them to know the campus resources available in the Titan Success Center as well as to promote self-care for students during the tough and busy times of the semester.
SGA President Chloe Garner, who is also president of the TSU, presented the funding request for $107.82. SGA voted unanimously to fund this organization’s event.
The History Club also presented a funding request. They are planning a trip from March 16-20 to Tennessee’s and Alabama’s historical sites associated with the Civil War time period. The senators discussed the request for 10 minutes, giving them time to weigh whether to provide $5,369.32 for 21 people to attend the trip, which will be open to all IU South Bend students.
The SGA inquired about the club’s reason for choosing Tennessee and Alabama instead of Washington, D.C., which they visited last year. Representing the club, Kevin Price responded, “This year we are concentrating more on civil war history that is closely associated with Indiana state.”
Ultimately, the senate voted to approve the funding.
Representatives from the Student Nurses Association, including over 10 supportive nursing students, were also present as SGA revisited the SNA’s request for funds to attend an annual conference in Seattle.
The SNA modified their request to remove food costs, which the SGA has stated it does not fund, bringing the request to $9,706.60 for travel, lodging and transportation.
The SGA voted to deny the funding request, with some members reasoning that the conference provided a benefit only to nursing students and not others on campus, leading them to save the money for campus events catered to students of various backgrounds and departments.
The SGA meets every Friday from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in SAC 225. These meetings are public, and students are encouraged to attend.
