On Jan. 28, the Titan Productions and Student Engagement Committee from the Student Government Association held a focus group for students to join and speak about their opinions about events on campus. This was an open focus group, where anyone could join and attend the discussion. Pizza and free pens and notebooks were provided.
After introductions and an ice breaker (snowball fight versus snow angels), Grace Leffert, the chair of the committee, led the discussion. Leffert asked what kind of events the students thought were beneficial to student life. The group decided they enjoyed the diversity in events and low-commitment events. We quickly moved over to some of the flaws of some of the events. There was an overwhelming agreement in the times of the events making them hard to attend to.
“There’s been an abundance of events, I just found that the time makes it hard to attend,” Marshall Warren said.

“It’s hard to get students to stay late in the night, but during the day students have classes, so it’s hard to find a good balance,” SGA President Chloe Garner said.
The group then moved onto how the events could be improved, but the topic stayed on the matter of the time of events.
“If we could have events around 4 p.m. when students are getting out of class, we could catch them right before they leave campus, and they usually don’t have another class to go to,” Garner said.
The group then focused on advertising and how they are able to find out about events. Posters and word of mouth were the most popular channels. The Daily Titan, Kory Vitangeli’s weekly email and Titan Atlas were also brought up. Along with this question, the group was asked how advertisements can be better.
“Being in a more visible spot. All this glass doesn’t really help,” TJ Johnson joked, pointing to the enclosed space the group was in.
If you missed this focus group and would still like to contribute your ideas, the next focus group will happen on Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. in Fireside.
