Look, I enjoy Christmas as much as the next person. I look forward to the holidays just like everybody else, but is it really time to defrost Mariah Carey yet? If you asked Hobby Lobby, their answer would be yes – they had Christmas decorations out before Halloween. I, however, think differently.
For starters, I can not be the only one who dreads the return of Christmas music. It’s the same ten songs every year with no variation, especially in retail stores. I’m not saying it’s bad – I’m just saying it’s ridiculous to listen to songs about snow when it’s still 60 degrees outside in northern Indiana. Fall is a short enough season in the midwest already – why be in a rush to get to winter?
Christmas also always overshadows Thanksgiving. I don’t know about you, but I think Thanksgiving is a very important holiday that shouldn’t be forgotten about in exchange for Christmas. Sure, you might get a lot of presents on Christmas, but that’s not all it should be about. It’s about spending time with friends and family and being thankful for them and the moments you share with them…hey, doesn’t that sound an awful lot like another holiday?
So, when is the right time to start celebrating Christmas? The correct answer, in my opinion, is after Thanksgiving. Once Thanksgiving is over and December hits, it’s all fair game. Start putting up your trees and listening to your Christmas music. But for right now, stow your stockings and stuff your turkeys Titans, it’s Thanksgiving time.
