Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, leader of the New Progressive Party who supports Puerto Rican statehood, won the Puerto Rican election on Nov. 5 with 39.45% of votes. This marks the party’s third consecutive year in power.
Juan Dalmau, who ran with the independent party, obtained 32.78% of the votes, becoming the first candidate outside of the two main parties to earn second place in a general election.
The Popular Democratic Party got third place, with Jesus Manuel Ortiz winning 21.02% of the votes. Javier Jimenez from Project Dignity received 7% of the votes.
Gonzalez-Colon has celebrated her win with the Puerto Rican people.
“This is the beginning of a glorious transformation in our country,” Gonzalez-Colon said. “Thank you all for helping me make history.”
Gonzalez-Colon will replace current governor Pedro Pierluisi, who was previously defeated by Gonzalez-Colon in their party’s primary election.
In her acceptance speech, Gonzalez-Colon remarked that she will be a governor for all Puerto Ricans, including those who voted against her or did not vote.
