MATCHING ON THE FIRST DATE. Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding agree that a splash of red can really pull an outfit together.

It’s only February, so already having a contender for what my favorite movie of the year might be a little hasty to be sure, but “Heart Eyes” (2025) was an incredible watch. I went in blind to every detail except that it was a slasher, and that is the experience I recommend.
You won’t find any crazy spoilers in this review, but I do talk a little bit about the ending and the tone of the movie, and I think that just letting those be a sweet little surprise for yourself is better. Come back after you watch so that we can gush about it together.
With that out of the way… I want to say that I did not go into this expecting much, honestly. I thought the mask in the trailers looked lame (and I honestly still do, unfortunately), and I’m always a little wary towards modern slashers making an attempt at camp. It can come across as TOO cheesy – trying too hard. Sterile, almost.
“Heart Eyes” circumvents this by being genuinely inventive. I was tricked into watching a rom-com, and I loved it. Of course, no film is perfect, and I had a couple of issues (mainly to do with the ending), but overall I think this is a very, very good dark comedy with everything you could really want from a slasher.
I know that I can get a little long-winded in my reviews, but honestly I don’t have a lot more I want to say about this. The acting is good, the dialogue is ridiculous, the sets are fun and the kills are narsty (I say this affectionately). I don’t employ a rating system because it feels too limiting, but I would love to give this movie five big booms.
Now, I want to preface (haha, Preface) the following statement with a promise that I am not being paid to say this, obviously. I just feel very strongly about this movie. If you like sexy campy goofy horror and you did not listen to me earlier, listen to me now: go watch this immediately. Or wait for it to come out on streaming, I’m not your dad.
