Like most students, from May to August The Preface took a holiday. But staff kept their eyes open and their ears to the ground. Here’s what happened over the break.
South Bend turned 150 years old in 2015. In May, residents of the city celebrated with an enormous birthday bash, featuring a zip line over the river, fireworks and a performance by Ben Folds and a special guest—Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Speaking of Mayor Pete: The national media briefly fixed their gazes upon South Bend as Buttigieg announced he is gay in a June editorial in the South Bend Tribune.
Also in June, the Supreme Court of the United States of America decided all states must allow gay marriage in a 5-4 ruling. The White House was illuminated in the colors of the rainbow on the eve of the decision.
The court also decided a case with important implications for The Affordable Care Act, sometimes called Obama Care. In a 6-3 decision, the court upheld the legality of the law’s marketplace subsidies in states that refused to establish their own marketplaces, essentially saving The Affordable Care Act.
Greenlawn Hall finally fell. This summer, the school demolished the last remnants of the building, which was purchased by IU South Bend in 1966. The building was once home to the School of Education. A “green space” occupies the land where Greenlawn once stood.
