Women’s basketball falls at #1 Indiana Wesleyan
On Saturday, Nov. 2, The Indiana University South Bend women’s basketball team traveled to Marion, Ind., to take on the #1 ranked Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats. The Titans seemed to have trouble scoring against the Wildcat defense, scoring just 42 points on 15-of-43 shooting (35%). IWU shot 44% from the field on 25-of-57 shooting.
In the opening half, the Wildcats scored the first basket to take an early 2-0 lead, and would never look back. Trailing 12-6, Kaylie Fraze (Farmland, IN) converted a three point basket to bring cut the IWU lead to three points. However, the Wildcats would go on a 13-3 to open up a 12 point advantage with 4:48 to play in the first half.
With just over two minutes, Lauren Adams (Goshen, IN) would turn an IWU turnover into two points to bring the Titans within five points. IWU would score the final seven points of the half to take a 12 point lead into halftime.
Four minutes into the second frame, Maegan Callaway (Mooresville, IN) knocked down a jumper to cut the IWU advantage in half at 36-30. IWU went on a back-breaking 35-10 run that lasted nearly 13 minutes to put the game out of reach for the Titans.
Callaway led the Titans with 13 points 5-of-16 shooting while Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN) grabbed a team-leading five rebounds.
Men’s basketball edged by Cardinals
Despite shooting 40% from the field, the Titans fell to Andrews University by a score of 75-66 on Thursday, Oct. 31. The Titans committed 18 turnovers which resulted in 24 points for the Cardinals.
IU South Bend got into an early hole and could not seem to recover as they trailed by as many as 13 points in the opening 20 minutes of action. Near the end of the half, the Titans would make a run and cut the Cardinal lead to three points, but Andrews would convert a basket at the end of the half to take a five point lead into the half.
Just over three minutes into the second half, the Titans knotted the game when Riley Stichter (Milford) scored a layup to even the game at 41. Andrews answered with a 9-2 run to open up a seven point advantage and the Titans would never bounce back as Andrews would knock down free throws down the stretch to seal the nine point win.
Jason Jordan (South Bend) paced the Titans offense with 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Stichter chipped in with 16 points on the night, while
leading the Titans with eight rebounds.
Matthew Little of Andrews led all scorers with 27 points, while Tyler Woolridge recorded 18.
