With a straight set victory over the Maple Leafs, the Titans picked up their 16th win of the season on Saturday, Nov. 2, a program best for wins in a season. The Goshen defense proved to be no match for the Titan attackers, as IU South Bend outhit Goshen .287 (47-16-108) to .131 (33-19-107).
The Titans controlled the opening set from the first serve, as they climbed out to an early 4-0 advantage and would never give up the lead in set number one. The IU South Bend attack was too much for the Goshen defense to handle, as the Titans hit .303 (14-4-33). Emily Kozinski (Edwardsburg) and Kaitlin Zachary (Knox, IN) led the Titans with four kills each, while Krystle Troyer (Elkhart) added three.
The Titans continued to show their dominance on the attack in the middle set, outhitting Goshen .265 (14-5-34) to .125 (11-7-32). However, trailing 19-12, the Maple Leafs would use an 8-4 run to cut the IU South Bend lead to just three points. Zachary would slam home back-to-back kills to secure the Titan victory 25-20. Krystle Troyer led the Titans with four kills, while Kozinski and Sierra Conklin (LaPorte) each had three.
A back-and-forth 3rd set that featured seven ties and four lead changes went the way of the Titans, 29-27. Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Maple Leafs made what would be the final set, an interesting one. The Titans held an early 10-4 lead, but Goshen used a 15-9 run to turn a six point deficit into a tie game at 19. The Maple Leafs took their first lead of the entire match with three consecutive kills.
Trailing by one, a Goshen error sandwiched between two Krystle Troyer kills would be the difference in the third set, as the Titans completed the straight set victory.
Krystle Troyer and Emily Kozinski each picked up 12 kills in the win. Macellari led the Titans with 35 assists, while Melanie Troyer (Elkhart) recorded 13 digs.
The Titans will wrap up regular season play as they host Purdue Calumet on Thursday, Nov. 7, for senior night.
