The Preface
In August, I caved. I wanted to give Attack on Titan a shot. I had always heard that this show was very similar to Game of Thrones, one of my all-time favorites and a show that was very formative to my media taste. The epic story, the vast amount of characters, the complexity, royalty, politics – all of it.
Information about developments in Israel and Palestine is at our fingertips, and with multiple different narratives fighting for dominance, The Preface decided to ask IU South Bend students what they think.
As political discussions move into personal social media spaces, consumers can be confronted with a range of challenges. For many social media users, the influx of political content can be a source of irritation and stress; others think social media has no real effect on current events; others still believe it can be a beneficial way to help people get involved with issues that are important to them.
Discerning facts about global issues with complex histories is no easy task. Especially with near-infinite streams of information, which can report similar information while also telling completely different stories, it’s difficult to make sense of what is true and important. Part of the path to information literacy is understanding language.
On Nov. 3, the Student Government Association (SGA) met to discuss funding requests and reports and to announce the resignation of Former Treasurer Ian Greaves.
On Wednesday, Nov. 8, IU South Bend celebrated first-generation college students in Fireside A and B.
On Nov. 8, Holy Cross College hosted its annual CCAC-Crossroads Challenge where IU South Bend’s men’s basketball team squared off against their cross-town rivals, the Bethel University Pilots. The Titans would drop a close one 76-73.
This week, I decided to go out to Niles, Mich., which is about a 30-minute drive from IU South Bend’s campus. A few small businesses have been added to Niles’ downtown area, including a new coffeehouse named 2nd & Main located at 127 E Main St.
A survey from IU South Bend’s Center for a Sustainable Future (CSF) revealed that one in four students is food insecure. Feeding America further claims that 40 percent of all food is wasted.
If you live in or near South Bend, there are a variety of free resources you can take advantage of if you need support, ranging from concrete provisions like food and shelter to fulfillment needs like community and advocacy. If you don’t need these resources right now and instead are in a place to give back, consider volunteering your time in the holiday spirit of gratitude and generosity.
