On April 20, The Center for a Sustainable Future celebrated Earth Day in collaboration with Botany Club and the Honors Program with various events throughout the day, including film screenings and a sustainability fair.
At the University Grill, 15 local nonprofits, organizations and businesses involved in sustainability held booths presenting research and sharing their mission. These included:
- Inovateus Solar
- SW Recycling
- St. Joseph County Soil and Water Conservation District
- SJC Department of Health
- Unity Gardens
- South Bend Office of Sustainability
- MACOG and AmeriCorps
- Cultivate Food Rescue
- Good Shepherd Montessori School
- South Bend Bike Garage
- Elektron Motion and Bird Bikes
- Michiana Stormwater Alliance
- Wild Ones South Bend Chapter
- Titans Feeding Titans
- Citizens’ Climate Lobby
- Green Bridge Growers
Tables at the event had pamphlets, photos and volunteer and internship opportunities. There were also hands-on activities such as an augmented reality water sand box and a mannequin with hidden ticks to bring awareness to public health issues.
The celebrations of the day also included two screenings of the film “A Conversation with Gen Z about Climate Change and the Future,” created by Mira Costello and Sarah Lynn as students of Zachary Schrank, director of the Center for a Sustainable Future. The film is now available to stream on the Center for a Sustainable Future’s website.
