On April 20, The Center for a Sustainable Future celebrated Earth Day in collaboration with Botany Club and the Honors Program with various events throughout the day, including film screenings and a sustainability fair.

At the University Grill, 15 local nonprofits, organizations and businesses involved in sustainability held booths presenting research and sharing their mission. These included:

  • Inovateus Solar
  • SW Recycling
  • St. Joseph County Soil and Water Conservation District
  • SJC Department of Health
  • Unity Gardens
  • South Bend Office of Sustainability
  • MACOG and AmeriCorps
  • Cultivate Food Rescue
  • Good Shepherd Montessori School
  • South Bend Bike Garage
  • Elektron Motion and Bird Bikes
  • Michiana Stormwater Alliance
  • Wild Ones South Bend Chapter
  • Titans Feeding Titans
  • Citizens’ Climate Lobby
  • Green Bridge Growers

Tables at the event had pamphlets, photos and volunteer and internship opportunities. There were also hands-on activities such as an augmented reality water sand box and a mannequin with hidden ticks to bring awareness to public health issues.

The celebrations of the day also included two screenings of the film “A Conversation with Gen Z about Climate Change and the Future,” created by Mira Costello and Sarah Lynn as students of Zachary Schrank, director of the Center for a Sustainable Future. The film is now available to stream on the Center for a Sustainable Future’s website.
