Why is the Hulk considered a very good gardener? Because he’s got green thumbs! But the Hulk doesn’t have to be the only green thumbed hero – the Unity Gardens of South Bend invites you to join them. Bring yourself, a friend or a family member (tools are provided) and help plant all sorts of vegetables from tomatoes, peppers and lettuce to peas, kale and turnips. Your hard work won’t go unnoticed – you are welcome to take any delicious home grown food back with you when you leave.
The Unity Gardens are perfect for students who need volunteer hours or just want to give back to the local community. Join the gardening party any Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon or any Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Their main garden is located in Lasalle Square at 3071 Prast Blvd. in South Bend.
The mission of Unity Gardens is to improve the community’s health in fun, creative, and social ways. Not only does this garden provide tours, classes and education, it also provides people with inspiration, knowledge and empowerment for the good work they do. There are more than 150 classes, 55 gardens, and farm animals like chickens, ducks and goats for children to feed. They provide tips, tricks and knowledge about growing your own garden and how to keep it safe throughout the off seasons.
Sara Stewart, the founder of Unity Gardens, says people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome because it is a way for people to be a part of something bigger than themselves. She created Unity Gardens as an inclusive way to provide the community with nutritionally fresh foods. Their cultural value is set on having diverse groups of people come together and grow food for everyone. This dignified free food experience welcomes all types of people from all different backgrounds.
If you are looking for some good company, a sanctuary, or someplace to put a smile on your face, Unity Gardens is for you. For more information regarding fundraising and upcoming classes contact growunitygardens@yahoo.com. You can also locate their website at theunitygardens.org.
