South Bend has quickly become a hotspot for coffee shops within the last few years. Recently, many new coffee shops have been brought to the area, creating many wonderful options. Sharing my love for coffee is my passion as a local barista in the South Bend community, and I am so excited to be able to share my adventures in new cafes.
Sway Coffee House is a sleek, modern coffee shop in downtown South Bend. It is located at 527 E. Colfax Ave S., less than 10 minutes away from campus.
The café has a very clean and calm atmosphere with large windows spanning most of the walls. Sway also makes the syrups in house as well as the food there. The owner of Sway roasts the coffee beans himself, according to the employees. Sway has an extensive menu of breakfast and lunch foods on the lighter side.
I really like the butterscotch syrup latte with cinnamon there, suggested by current employee Joanna. Sway also has pastries that change every day. I had a Nutella Strawberry Sourdough Waffle that was very yummy on my last visit.
There is consistent WiFi and the noise level stays fairly low. One unique part of Sway is that it has both indoor seating and a rooftop patio as well during the warmer months. One downside is that I have had a bit more trouble finding outlets to charge my laptop, so make sure to be prepared when studying there, especially if it’s busy that day.
“I think Sway is unique because of the quality of the coffee,” Julia, an employee at Sway, said. She continued, saying she thinks their goal is to be “a place where people can come to relax and study and get things done. We want people to feel well taken care of.”
The employees recommended the avocado toast, breakfast burrito, sweet and spicy sandwich, and apple almond butter honey toast as their favorite foods on the menu.
Sway is a great place to focus and study due to its white, minimalist aesthetic. I would definitely consider it to be more of a working space than a general hangout area and would suggest it to anybody looking for a quiet spot with a great menu.

This place is a rename of the Embassy Coffee, whose Goshen-based owners (and another location there) received protests after criticzing the Black Lives Matter movement.
