IU South Bend hosted the Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) on April 22 to share the amazing work that students are doing both inside and outside of the classroom. The event was open to all majors and concentrations and generated 70 distinct proposals.

The event began at 8 a.m. with registration and continued until 2:30 p.m. There were three panel sessions as well as two poster sessions. The session took place in a variety of classrooms within the Education and Arts Building.

IU South Bend was excited to have the event hosted in-person this year. It had to be canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was hosted virtually in 2021. This event was a great opportunity for students to not only present their research, but to connect with other students, faculty and staff.

The conference presented research on a variety of topics such as voting systems, film, criminal justice policies, music and many more. Additionally, the URC featured presentations in French. This variety of topics allowed students to share their passions with the community.

“I hope that my presentation, along with those of my fellow presenters, can encourage attendees to be more critical viewers and think more about Film Studies as an area of academic scholarship,” Parker Norris, IU South Bend alum and URC presenter, said.

This conference also gave students an opportunity to practice their presentation skills and prepare their writing for future professional work.

“The IU South Bend Undergraduate Research Conference affords students the opportunity to share the interesting work they are doing in the classroom with IU faculty, their peers, and the local community. It gives students a space to refine their writing and presenting skills for entry into the professional world or graduate study,” Matthew Mancino, Communication Studies professor, said.

Congratulations to all of the presenters for their hard work and dedication!
