ACE tutoring can help students with academic stress during these upcoming weeks, while another resource provided on campus for students is the Student Counseling Center (SCC).

The SCC is available free to students who are enrolled in at least one class at IU South Bend. The cost of counseling sessions are included in tuition.

“College Counseling Centers are such a hidden gem for the stress and distress associated with finals and the holidays…and it is free which fits into most college students’ budgets!” said Cynthia Murphy, Titan Success Center.

The SCC offers students short-term individualized counseling sessions either face to face or through Telehealth.

“We help students overcome personal obstacles, and promote academic success,” said Christine Bettcher, Student Counseling Center.

There are many services offered for students like in individual counseling, evaluation & assessment, crisis intervention, and consultation. They offer support in many areas from anxiety and depression to academic stress and time management. All services are confidential and provided by trained professional counselors or by advanced graduate student interns who are supervised by licensed mental health counselors.

“This is a great time to get started with counseling, seek stress-relief, and make a plan to receive caring support from a counselor in the new year!” said Bettcher.

If a student’s treatment exceeds the scope of services, they will help with community resources and referrals to community providers.

While the counseling center is a great resource for students, sometimes this can be intimidating for students. For those that do not want to come to the SCC Bettcher suggests that students strengthen their wellness practices such as eating healthy and drinking plenty of water and getting good exercise. She also said to take time for self-care during times of high stress.

“Research proves that physical movement can be helpful for lessening stress, so engage the body in regular, rhythmic exercise such as walking…Eat nutritional meals & snacks, and drink plenty of water. Research proves that spending time outdoors in nature significantly lessens stress, so bundle up, and get outside for a walk or hike in the woods!” said Bettcher.

To schedule an appointment call the Student Counseling Center at (574) 520-4125, or stop by the center in the Administration Building to schedule an appointment.
