IU South Bend baseball is approaching the end of their season, meaning they will be saying goodbye to six of their incredible seniors on Sunday, April 25 at 7 p.m. Each senior has left their everlasting mark on the IU South Bend baseball program and will dearly be missed by coaches, teammates and fans.
Kyle Hallberg is a senior out of Lansing, Ill. and came to South Bend after transferring from South Suburban College. Hallberg has made nearly 35 pitching appearances for the Titans pitching 26.1 innings. He has been a reliable piece out of the bullpen this season appearing in 12 games and earned his first save of the season against Lourdes University back on March 12. Hallberg is majoring in secondary education and plans to pursue a master’s degree in sports management and start coaching baseball.
Jack Shaffer wears number 17 on the field and comes from Germantown Hills, Ill. Shaffer started his career at Spoon River Community College before transferring to IU South Bend. He has played in 14 games including 27 appearances at the plate and picked up twelve defensive assists in the infield from his position at third base. Schaffer will graduate with a degree in secondary social studies and plans to attend grad school for sports administration.
The right fielder wearing number 18 on the field is TJ DeHerrera from Bolingbrook, Ill. DeHerrera took his extra season after last year was cut short. He has hit 39 doubles, six triples, and 19 home runs to total 136 hits in 170 games during his career wearing a Titan jersey. He leads the conference with ten home runs this season with a batting average of .229 in 34 games. DeHerrera was CCAC Player of the Week earlier in the season after going 4-for-5 with a double, three homers, six RBIs and three runs scored against Indiana Wesleyan.
Jordan Moore wears 21 on the field from Flat Rock, Mich. The catcher has played in 148 games during his career collecting 120 hits, 25 doubles, six homers and 68 RBIs. This season Moore has hit a season-high of four home runs and 21 RBIs in 28 appearances. Moore has already received his undergraduate degree in sports and exercise science from IU South Bend and is pursuing a master’s in public affairs and healthcare administration. He plans to pursue a career in medical equipment sales and eventually work towards healthcare management.
From all the way in Livermore, Calif. number 23, Matt Smith, has made a total of seven appearances with four starts as a Titan. Smith has pitched a total of 17.2 innings in his career striking out 16 batters.
