The Student Government Association election results have been confirmed after a two-day voting period.
IU South Bend students had the opportunity to vote for their choice of candidates during the 48-hour time period that began at midnight on Tuesday, April 13. Results were finalized and released on April 15.
Rana Hamad, current Vice-President, will take over the President position after winning with 65.47% of votes. Zachary Groulx received 27.35% of votes, and 7.17% chose not to vote for the position.
Kayla Isenbletter, current President, will take over the Vice-President position after winning with 68.61% of votes. Brent Newcomb, currently a senator, received 20.63% of votes, and 10.76% chose not to vote for the position.
Christian Martinez, current Treasurer, will remain in his position after willing with 92.83% of votes. There was no other candidate, and 7.17% chose not to vote for the position.
Sara McMahon, currently a senator, will take over the Secretary position after winning with 91.48% of votes. There was no other candidate, and 8.52% chose not to vote for the position.
The Senator-at-Large candidate results are listed below:
- Diana Baca Delgado with 14.29%
- Maddie West with 13.66%
- Tahyia Rehman Alvi with 13.04%
- Rachel Kario with 12.53%
- Benson Jengela with 12.01%
- Amanda Parkinson with 11.18%
- Marissa Million with 11.08%
- Boris Toure with 9.21%
An exact 3% of voters chose not to vote for the position.
Bradyn Serna was voted the Judd Leighton School of Business and Economics Representative with 92.31% of votes. There were no other candidates that ran for this position, and 7.69% chose not to vote for the position.
Naseen Alfadhl was voted the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Representative with 93.48% of votes. There were no other candidates that ran for this position, and 6.52% chose not to vote for the position.
There were no representative candidates from the Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences, School of Education, Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts or School of Social Work.
According to the results, a total of 223 students voted in this year’s SGA election. A total of 41.26% of these votes came from students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students in the Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences gave 17.94% of the votes, while those in the Judd Leighton School of Business and Economics followed with 17.49%. The School of Education gave 9.42%, the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts gave 8.97%, and the School of Social Work gave 4.93% of the total votes.
Though the total of 223 votes is relatively low, all students were made aware of their opportunity and right to vote.
“This process should take only a few minutes and it is important that you participate in the elections. This is one of your rights as an IU South Bend student.,” Scott Strittmatter, director of Housing and Student Life, explained in an email sent to students. “These will be the students who represent out student body and their concerns for you the following year.”
