The IU South Bend Honors Program is currently hosting a donation book drive for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
The book drive is being held to provide books to the Success Academy School Library. The idea originally stemmed from a collaboration between the Honors Program and the National Honors Society at Career Academy South Bend.
“The Career Academy South Bend are the ones who noticed the issue, which is a lack of books for the Success Academy School Library,” Paige Closson, Honors Program intern, said.
The Honors Program puts together several donation drives throughout each year for various causes and organizations. According to Closson, the National Honors Society at Career Academy South Bend started a GoFundMe to raise money to purchase books. However, when the Honors Program team heard their story, they decided to do something to help.
“We decided we could do a book drive on our campus and offer service hours to the honors students if they wrote letters for the books they donated,” Closson said.
Donated books are asked to be fitting for the elementary student ages. Students are also asked to write a short letter on the inside of the book for the students to read.
Honors students will receive one service hour for every five books they donate. Each book must include a handwritten letter on the inside in order to receive credit.
Donations can be placed in the box in the Honors Program lounge. For non-honors students who need assistance locating or accessing the lounge, they can contact Closson at email@example.com to arrange for donation drop off. Closson says that they are hoping to receive hundreds of books for the elementary school.
The drive is planned to continue until the end of the semester.
