Another scholarship and research-based opportunity for students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines is now seeking applications. The deadline for this year is fast approaching on Dec. 1.

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate students alike in the STEM fields a chance to pursue their studies, receive full tuition, complete a summer internship and pursue full-time employment opportunities with the Department of Defense upon completion of their degree.

Assistant Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Tabitha Kingsbury says that the program has many benefits beyond those listed above.

For instance, “During college the program also provides health insurance assistance, book allowance, and a stipend,” Kingsbury said.

Students interested in applying must meet the following requirements: be a U.S.citizen of at least 18, have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A, and be actively pursuing either a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate in one of the 21 STEM fields.

“Students are also working with an experienced mentor at one of the Sponsoring Facilities.  For each year of scholarship, recipients are required to work for the DoD an equal number of years (1 to 1 ratio).  After graduation, students begin their full-time employment with the DoD; this creates a built-in plan for their first career position after graduation.  This program will allow students to utilize their skills and talents for the DoD working to protect those who protect us,” Kingsbury said.

For more information students can visit the SMART scholarship 2021 web page or watch the short Youtube video on the program. Students should also mark their calendars for March 1 which is the campus-wide IU Online Scholarship Application deadline, for more scholarship opportunities.
