Morgan Koenig was one of several students who had their artwork displayed in the art gallery in the Education and Arts building on campus. The student exhibition opened on Feb. 13, 2020, and will be open through March 14, 2020.
Koenig created a piece that she calls “Rumors Dress,” which is about taking fashion icons and turning them into modern fashion. She took the “witchy” fashion sense of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and turned it into her own, by using a dress Nicks wore on the cover of the album “Rumors.”
“A lot of the style features the larger bell sleeves, sheer panels, boho style lace, and gold or silver accents.” Koenig says.
A lot of Nicks’ style consisted of these traits. Koenig sees Nicks as a mainstream fashion icon, and she wanted to put her own flair on Nicks’ style to make it fit in more modern fashion.
Rumors Dress is black, keeping the large bell sleeves with the boho style lace at the ends, and a large gold flower on the chest.
According to Koenig, the hardest part about making this dress was working with the different types of fabric. She used four-way stretch and sheer fabrics to create the modern-day twist. Koenig had overcome the hardship of sewing the different fabrics by hand-sewing the neckline and using overstitching to her advantage.
“Basically, it was knowing when to call your losses and take them into stride for the next piece,” Koenig stated.
Koenig’s “Rumors Dress” and many more pieces are still on display at the Art Gallery in Education and Arts from 12 to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until March 14 2020, at 7 p.m.
