The IU South Bend women’s basketball team is two-thirds of the way done with their season and is currently ranked third in their conference. The team’s current record is 19-4, with 11 of those wins being conference wins. The basketball team is one of six teams in the country, including NCAA, with 19-plus wins during the 2019-2020 season.
Comparing this season’s record so far to previous years’ records shows a great increase. In previous seasons the Titans never reached more than ten conference wins for their entire season, and this year’s team has already surpassed that.
“We have had much better team chemistry this year compared to previous years. We get along off and on the court so well. Previous years it was a lot of selfish ball and now we all mesh together much better,” senior, Taylor Wesley said.
The team still has a few regular season games coming up throughout the month of February, but it all comes down to how they will do in their conference tournament at the end of the month.
“We have had a few bumps in the road this past January, but we are really trying to focus on getting tougher and communicating before. Once we work out the kinks, everything will be great” Wesley said. “We want to win and beat the teams that we lost to. Most importantly get to the national tournament,” Wesley added.
“I want for us to come out strong at the conference tourney. During the first game, we need to set the tone and keep pushing the whole game,” senior, Kyleigh Kubik said. “We compete so hard in practice against each other. Everyone is striving to make each other better when we practice, and we are keeping our team bond close which always helps when adversity hits,” Kubik added.
When it comes to a winning season, there are a lot of things that come with achieving it; but being one of six teams with a 19-plus winning season it takes a team of women who know how to play and know how to play together.
“It’s a great feeling! Especially with it being my senior year, I appreciate this being a good last year for me and my other senior teammates,” Wesley said.
“To me it’s humbling. Knowing how hard we have worked to get to this point is rewarding,” Kubik said.
