For students looking for things to do around town, whether to plan a date, hang out with friends, make some new friends, or just wanting to connect with the community, here are a few options for this week and coming up:
Love dancing? Need Valentine’s Day plans? Havana Nights at Langlab is perfect, appropriately scheduled on February 14, Valentine’s Day.
Langlab is located at 1302 High Street in South Bend, just down the street from The Crooked Ewe.
There is a $5 cover charge, but that pays for dancing from 7:30 p.m.-12 a.m. Jon Green will be the special guest instructor teaching an hour class.
Musically inclined? Check out the Jazz Open Session hosted by the Merrimans every Tuesday from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at 1211 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. This event is open for guests to play, listen, and learn.
Love food and benefiting free community gardens as well as college hospitality programs? Come to Perfect Pairings. This event is a collaboration of Unity Garden’s and Ivy Tech’s Hospitality Administration Program, and proceeds raised will benefit them.
The event takes place tomorrow, February 6 and goes from 5-8 p.m. It is located at ALoft Hotel 111 N. Main St. South Bend. It costs $50 for the night of hors d’ouvres, wine, tapas, beer, and chocolate.
For those looking for an activity for their children, the Youth Art Workshop at the LGBTQ center is a great option.
The LGBTQ Center is located at 1522 East Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. The art workshop is open for grades 6 through 12. The next workshop is this Friday, February 7 from 5-7 p.m.
For individuals concerned with climate change, who wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the fires in Australia, and who think South Bend could do more to preserve and benefit our environment, Fridays for Future to demand change in the city are important events that deal with these issues.
Occurring every Friday, the group meets at the City Building 227 W Jefferson Street, South Bend from 12-1 p.m.
For individuals interested in learning and classes aren’t quite enough for their insatiable minds, IU South Bend has Pop Up University talks at Langlab!
March 26, Peter Bushnell will be giving a talk titled, “Fish and Ships: Researching sharks from pole (fishing) to pole (North)” from 7-8 p.m.
De Bryant will be presenting on April 16 her talk titled, “Light Bringer: Public Art, Storytelling, and Social Justice”.
There is also the Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Public Forum on Friday, February 7 from 12-1 p.m. in DW 2260. Professor Andrea Rusnock will be giving a talk titled, “Victor or Victim: Representations of Soviet Women During WWII.”
Hopefully this article gave you some ideas, or at least a place to start looking. I’m sure we could all use to go out and shake off some of this January funk.
