Senior Night for the end of the normal women’s basketball season had the IU South Bend Titans playing the Governors State University Tigers on Feb. 13.
Erin Guzicki, the only senior on the team, played 39 out of the total 40 minutes. She finished with 11 points, 6 assists, and 2 rebounds as well as hitting three-pointers, a first in her college career. With 50 seconds left in the game Coach Steve Bruce called his final timeout to take her out. As she was walking off the court for one final time, the crowd and the bench gave her a standing ovation. All her hard work leading up to here paid off.
“It really was a happy moment, and it was a well-deserved moment because she has worked so hard for something like this to happen,” Head Coach Steve Bruce said.
After being out of basketball for almost two full years, Erin was a little rusty
“She will be the first one to admit this, she was out of rhythm,” Bruce said. “She has worked her way into becoming a good college basketball player.”
Courtney Raymer splashed a jumper to give the Titans (12-16,8-11 CCAC) a 10-8 lead with 2:44 left in the first quarter. They never looked back. The Titans finished the first quarter on a 13-0 run to go up 21-8 and ended up winning 74-60 over Governors State Tigers (16-12,9-10 CCAC). Kyleigh Kubik was unconscious from beyond the arc as she went 6-7 and finished 9-14 from the field for a total of 24 points to go along with 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Rachel Robards played only 29 minutes but finished with a double-double as she had 16 points and 11 rebounds which led the team. She also went 4-5 from beyond the arc.
Amber Brooks led Governors State University in almost every statistical category. She led the team with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Tyisha Worthy helped in the losing cause with 12 points and 3 assists which led the team.
The Titans dominated in almost every team statistical category. The Titans shot 48 percent from the field and 62 percent (13-21) from the three. The Tigers despite shooting 46 percent from the field, only managed to shoot 21 percent (3-14) from the three. The Titans also outmuscled the Tigers, posting a +18 margin on the boards (41-23). The Titans also showed great teamwork with 19 assists on their 27 made field goals (70 percent).
