Congresswoman Jackie Walorski wins Tuesday’s midterm election with 57% of the votes to continue representing Congressional District 2 in Indiana. With Democrat candidate Mel Hall taking 43% of the votes, it was not enough to overpower the incumbent’s status. Walorski celebrated at The Exchange in downtown South Bend, speaking with attendants with Queen’s “We are the champions” blaring through the crowded event space.
Hall gave his secession speech around 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, just blocks from Walorski’s celebration, with press facing closed doors to the hall at Aloft in downtown South Bend.
“This election was about the future of our country and about giving Hoosiers a voice,” said Walorski, in a statement to “The Preface.” “I’m humbled and grateful that the 2nd District Hoosiers have placed their trust in me again. No matter which party is in charge in Congress, my job will be the same: to fight for Hoosiers.”
Hall’s campaign released a statement following the election results as well.
“Even though we came up short tonight, I’m proud of the campaign we ran, and the people ewe met along the way,” he said. “Many folks across the district are eager for a representative who will protect their health care, grow good-paying jobs, and clean up the partisan mess in Congress.”
The statement continued that Hall was encouraged by the showing and the enthusiasm he witnessed in Indiana’s 2nd Congressional district.
