IUSB Women’s Basketball wins season opener versus Grace College

The IU South Bend Women’s Basketball team defeated Grace College at home on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The IU South Bend Titans defeated the Grace College Lancers by a final score of 77-58.

The Titans started the first quarter of play by going on a 0-8 point run, which would prove to be the largest lead held by the Lancers throughout the entire game. The Titans would eventually come back to within one point, after giving up a 3-point basket by Kamryn Hostetler, with 5:34 to go in the first quarter. This would make the score 11-12, in favor of the Lancers, and the Titans would go on to take a 18-23 point lead at the conclusion the first quarter of play, highlighted by a 3-point shot by Erin Guzicki, as time expired at the end of the first quarter.

To start the second quarter of play, a turnover by Grace College’s Brooke Sugg, with 9:37 left in the second quarter, lead to a layup from Taylor Wesley, giving the Titan’s an 18-25 advantage. The Titans would once again score with a 3-point basket by Erin Guzicki, after a couple of thwarted team attempts, giving the Titans a ten-point advantage, with 8:38 left in the first half. With 8:24 left in the first half, Brielle Wilson hits a 3-point basket, to make the score 21-28, in favor of the Titans.

The Titans would take a 45-34 lead into the locker room at halftime, and would not give this lead away, as they would go on to add to it as the game progressed, leading by as many as 23 points with 9:00 left in the fourth quarter of play.

The Titans went 30-64, with a success rate of 46.9 percent. The Titans also shot 15-29 from beyond the three-point arc, giving them a success rate of 51.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc for the game. The Titans went 2-7 in free throws, giving them a 28.6 percent success rate from the free throw line for the game.

Kyleigh Kubik would pace the Titan’s offense, with a total of 23 points scored for the game. Kubik also led the Titans with a 70 percent shooting percentage from beyond the three-point arc, making seven of ten shots attempted.

The Titans will continue their season when they will match up with the Spring Arbor University Women’s basketball team on Saturday, Oct. 27, at home at 1:00 p.m. at the Student Activity Center.
