The women’s and men’s tennis teams were welcomed into the IU South Bend Titan athletics program with their first matches of the season, March 20 and 21. Travelling just across the city to Notre Dame, the Titans took on the Holy Cross Saints.

For the women on Tuesday, six Titans competed in the school’s first women’s match: juniors Rebecca Wooster, Lexy Deak, Darcy Fair, Morgan Rockhill, Carla Murillo and Hanna Quinn. Their doubles matches started the night off. It was a rough one for the Titans, as the duos of Wooster-Fair and Deak-Rockhill took losses. However, one doubles team defeated their opponents, when Murillo-Quinn won 8-4.

In their singles matchups, Murillo took both wins against her Holy Cross opponent, 6-2 both sets. Quinn gave her opponent a run for her money after going 1-1 on sets, but losing the third and final set.

On Wednesday, the men competed against the Saints and it definitely did not go as planned. But for the first outing of the organization, there is always room for improvement. The team consisted of six new additions: sophomore Alex Boyer, junior Brendon Handy, and seniors Bob Devetski, Keon Jones, Taylor Becht and Sam Wilson.

The doubles teams of Boyer-Handy, Jones-Devetski, and Wilson-Becht struggled against a strong Holy Cross team. All six players lost their sets in their singles contests, but all put up a well-rounded fight.

For the first week of matches, the Titans did very well working together as a team and coming together as an organization. For coaches Jessica and Nick Simeri, they have a strong group of athletes for the season.
