South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will speak at IU South Bend at 5 p.m., Jan. 29, as part of an Arts Lecture series hosted by the Communication Studies Department.

The Mayor will speak about issues concerning community leadership, both on local and global scales, including how the South Bend community plays a role in these issues. He is expected to speak about his college, military, and political experiences in relation to this topic.

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions during the event.

The speech will be hosted in Northside Hall at the Louise E. Addicott and Yatish J. Joshi Performance Hall. The admission for this event is free, but tickets must be obtained at the arts box office or online. The event is expected to sell out.

There will be a second lecture in the series on Feb. 28 by Dr. Richard Khleif who is the Senior Director of Communications for Global Customer Support at Oracle. This talk will be about communication and information industry in the global era.

“We try to combine both academic and professional perspectives that can inspire our minds in a critical manner. Because the area of what we call communication is so diverse and interdisciplinary, we try to bring in speakers who can reflect the nature of what communication is about,” said Communication Studies Department chair Yuri Obata.
