The IU South Bend women’s basketball team went on the road last Wednesday to face the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers, who boasted an impressive 13-6 record overall. The Titans would try to break a three-game losing streak to the Tigers, who’s record in the conference was an impressive 10-0.
Sophomore Vicki Gard started the game off with an early three to give IU South Bend the early lead. That lead, however, vanished quickly when the momentum started to turn in the Tigers favor around the six-minute mark. As time rolled on, the women found themselves down big at the end of the first quarter, with a score of 30-18.
Things only became worse from there as the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter. The Titans continued to try and battle back but got completely outscored in the second quarter, 35-15.
At halftime, the Titans were down by a score of 65-33 as the women shot just 42.9 percent from the field while the Tigers had 54.5 percent. The biggest factor for the Tiger’s large lead at half was their three-point shooting, as they completed just 10 for 21 from behind the arc while the Titans converted just one for seven attempts.
As the second half started, it was more of the same energy from the first half as the Tigers dominated the entire way, outscoring the Titans in the third and fourth quarter. The mix of the three-point shots, better overall shooting and more shots taken to the basket helped the Tigers continue their momentum over the Titans in the second half.
The deficit was too large to overcome for the Titans with the final score being 114-72. Junior Tatyanna Goodson ended the game with a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds, while senior Jess Alexander stayed her the whole way with 15 points and five rebounds. Senior Paige Avery completed the game with 10 points and two steals while junior Loren Vukovits added nine points off the bench.
The women dropped to 12-9 overall after the loss, 3-8 in the CCAC.
