Coming off a three day rest from the holiday, the IU South Bend men’s basketball team rejoined and broke their four-game losing streak by taking on the Grey Wolves of Lourdes University.
The first five minutes of the game were a back and forth effort for both teams. Neither would lead by more than two points. But the Grey Wolves got some fire under their feet as continuous missed shots by the Titans allowed a 12-0 run.
Dylan Allen did not seem like himself in the first half as he missed, what would have been, 11 points. Jackson Edwards and Taylor Brooks helped the Titans fight back from a 23-9 deficit, as Matt Bullinger assisted T.J. Benner with a three point shot to end the half.
The Titans would trail 27-19 at the half, with only being 20 percent from behind the arc and 25 percent in the paint.
The second half was rocky at the start. Edwards turned-over the ball in the first five seconds, and Jackson a minute after that. Benner tried to liven things up with a steal and a block on the Grey Wolves offense, driving the ball down for a three point shot with the assist from Edwards.
Jackson, with 13:32 left in the game, stole the ball from the Lourdes offense and converted for two points down the court to put the Titans within one point.
Once again, it would be Benner with a floater from behind the arc that would give the Titans the lead with the assist from Alex Harmon. The Titans got their strength back as an offensive rebound by Bullinger allowed him to score two to continue the push.
With just under three minutes to play in regulation, Lourdes tied it up after a foul on Trevor Jain. Brooks would score the final four points for the Titans for the three point lead, but a three pointer by the Grey Wolves with 12 seconds left and a missed three by Benner sent the two into overtime.
Overtime would be a little more heart stopping for the crowd than they would like, as Lourdes would take a quick six point lead. Both teams were in the double bonus by the time the first minute of OT passed as it quickly became a free throw contest.
Brooks, Jackson, Edwards and Benner would all go up to the line for the Titans in the five minutes of OT. Jain converted a three pointer to add to a layup by Benner. But it would be Lourdes who would tie it up once again to force a double overtime.
IUSB wasted no time as Benner would drain a three for the first of three consecutive three point shots. Edwards was fouled and mad both of his free throws before Jain took the ball down the court for two easy threes, one of them an assist by Edwards.
Brooks committed his fourth foul of the game, allowing the Grey Wolves to come within nine. Jackson shot the final point at the line for the Titans, as the Grey Wolves had the last word with a layup. It wouldn’t be enough though, as the Titans would break their streak in a double overtime victory.
Benner had a game-high 25 point night, going perfect at the line and 4-6 behind the arc with six rebounds, playing a team-most 41 minutes. Brooks had the second highest 12 points for the team with a game high 15 rebounds.
The Titans improve to 5-4 on the season. Their next contest will be in Whiting, Ind., against Calumet College of St. Joseph on Wednesday, November 29 at 8:30 p.m. for their fourth conference game.
