Titan basketball off to a good start

The IU South Bend Women’s Basketball team played their first game of the season at home Oct. 26. The Titans took on the Grace College Lancers from Winona Lake, Ind.

For the Titans, junior Paige Avery scored the game-high 20 points and added five rebounds. Junior Courtney Smith was close behind her, adding 15 points to the scoreboard, as well as six rebounds and three steals. Freshman Vicki Gard scored 13 points in her first home game as a Titan. Sophomore Loren Vukovits had the most rebounds of any player during this game (11) and also added 8 points. Junior Sarah Rogian scored seven points and had two rebounds, while junior Brianna Blackwell and sophomore Lucy Presnal each added five points for the Titans.

Leading the Lancers were Vironnica Drake with 16 points and two steals and Darian Patton with 16 points and two rebounds. Close behind them was Kelsie Peterson with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Pam Miller had 6 points, and Haley Richardson and Brooke Sugg each had five points, with Sugg adding six rebounds. Hannah Adams scored four points for the Lancers and added three rebounds, while Chloe Pridgen added five rebounds to the team’s 41 total.

The Titans racked up 73 points overall, which was just enough to defeat the Lancers, who scored 69 points. This game made the Titans 1-0 on the season and the Lancers 1-1.

The IU South Bend Men’s Basketball team travelled to Celina, Ohio to play their first away game of the season at Wright State University (Lake Campus) on October 26.

The lead scorer for the Titans was Harmon Avery with 32 points, and he also stole the ball three times. Jeremy Jones and Joe Bannister each scored 11 points and Bannister had three steals, as well. Matt Bullinger had eight points and six rebounds. T.J. Benner added eight points, 10 rebounds, and four steals for the Titans. Taylor Brooks had seven points and eight rebounds. Jordan Vedder and Alex Harmon added six points each for the Titans.

Junior Tyler Daniel led the Lakers by adding the team-high 17 points to the scoreboard and rebounding six times. Junior Gilbert Carter was right behind him with 14 points and four rebounds. Freshman Blake Stephens scored 11 points and had six rebounds. Freshman Seamus Anglin had nine points and six rebounds. Sophomore Wes Bellegarade added seven points to the board, sophomore Kyler Johnson added six, and junior Jermaine Carter added five.

This game was a step in the right direction for IU South Bend. The Titans defeated the Lakers 98-71, starting off the season on a good note with a 1-0 record.
