The IUSB women’s basketball team fell just short Saturday against the Spring Arbor University Cougars.
A slow start and sloppy play plagued the Titans throughout the game, and their valiant effort to finish was not enough as the Titans fell to the Cougars 54-51.
In a game where the Titans managed to score just seven points in the first quarter, they still managed to claw their way back and make the final score more reasonable.
“We got down and we came back. I credit our girls for battling,” said Head Coach Steve Bruce. “But we turned the ball over at times that really hurt us.”
The missed baskets hurt too. The Titans got several good looks throughout the game that just weren’t falling. The Titans shot just 26%, 5-19, from beyond the arc and just 37% from the floor for the game.
“We’re a better shooting team than that,” said Bruce. “Today, that’s what we were. We’re not going to turn down those shots…but shooting is kind of fickle. Sometimes it feels good and sometimes it doesn’t. The looks we got were good, but I wish we would have just made one more.”
Senior Emily Macellari and sophomore Courtney Smith led the Titans with 14 points each.
The Titans next play cross-town rival Holy Cross College on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Center, followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
