Look out! There is a new player on campus. It could be you. The Franklin D. Schurz Library now has board games and card games available to play in your free time.
Joel Langston, manager of Media Services at IU South Bend, has been working to provide games for students on campus in order to boost student involvement, and provide safe, fun recreational activity.
“Engagement is helpful since we are on a commuter campus,” Langston said. “Games get people engaged with one another, and allow students to spend time doing things—not necessarily in class—to build community.”
Any IUSB student, faculty, or staff member is able to play games free of charge. Some games are educational; others are not. Current games include Ticket to Ride, King of Tokyo, Chess, cards, and Blokus.
As time goes on, more games will become available for students to use.
The games can be found on the shelves by the reference desk near the young adult fiction books. They are available for check out at the Circulation Desk in the library for 4 hours at a time. All you need are some friends and your student ID.
Starting in September, events will be taking place on campus that allow students to play the games as a group. The tabletop gaming events will be a once a month occurrence during the day from noon to 2 p.m. September 9 in the Fireside Grille rooms A and B. You can come alone, or with a group for this event.
