I can’t believe my time at the Preface and at IU South Bend is drawing to a close. It doesn’t feel real. It feels exciting and bittersweet at the same time. It’s been a crazy four years of hard work and self-discovery, and I’m so incredibly thankful for my time here and all the opportunities I’ve had.
I feel that all I have left to do is to thank everyone who has been there for me and helped me all these years.
First off, I absolutely have to thank H. Theodore Noell, Annette H. Noell, Lucille Gering and the late William Gering. Your generosity toward me in the form of scholarships has enabled me to complete my education.
I’ve spent the majority of my college years living in the greater South Bend area, and I’ve lived with some really awesome and amazing people over that time. Felix, hands down the best roommate (and DM) of all time. I’m so glad I’ve gotten to know you and the whole posse. You are like a brother to me. Casey, you are the most badass engineer I know. I can’t wait to hear about all the awesome bridges you will build! Ryan, living in your home has been an absolute pleasure. Coco and Toby bring joy to my heart every day. Tristan, you’re the bomb. Sean, you showed me kindness in some of the darkest moments of my life. I have a lot of respect for you. Elisabeth, it feels like just yesterday we were freshmen. Best of luck with your endeavors!
I’ve been so blessed to have been a part of this publication, and I need to thank everyone I’ve worked with at The Preface over the past three years.
I have to start with Sarah Emming. She took over as editor-in-chief just as I came on staff as the design editor. We always managed to fill the newspaper, get it to press and have a little bit of fun. We went to New York City together on a journalism conference trip – an experience that was a real turning point in my life, professionally and personally. I miss you, and I know you’ve got good things in your future!
Ken Klimek, a good friend and advisor to the group. You provide wisdom for us all when we need it most. I’m glad to have learned under you!
Jordan Rae Lucas and Ryan Lohman have really stepped forward to pick up the slack and take leadership roles. You have an amazing vision for the future, and The Preface will flourish with you both at the helm.
Mandi Steffey, Nick Wort, Danielle Miller, Leslie Letinsky, “Mike the ad guy,” Neil King, Geoff Lesar, Izza Jatala… There isn’t enough room to fit all the names of all the amazing people I’ve worked with since 2012. If we have ever worked at The Preface together, you are awesome, and I will miss you.
I’ve had some great professors over the years who have also impacted my life: Alec Hosterman, Yuri Obata – my absolutely amazing advisor, Robert Stockman, Barb Mociulski, Yuri Cataldo, Jason Lee Resler and many others.
Scott Strittmatter was always there to help me when I had questions, and he continues to better student life here on campus.
I also have to thank my leaders in the 4-H Media Club who first introduced me to journalism: Lauren Zeugner, Patty Wise and Larry Cripe.
I would also like to thank Steve Scott for the sick rhymes and life lessons. Some of my fondest memories are of car rides to Michigan with the windows down and the music up.
Also: Dale Earnhart Jr. and Jonah Hill. That stuff you told me on the elevator will stick with me forever.
Everyone who has been a part of my life and helped me though these last four years at IUSB, thanks, from the bottom of my heart. It’s been a crazy, wonderful experience, and I have nothing but gratitude and appreciation for my time here.
