By: CHRISTINE AIKEN
Staff Writer
Greetings, salutations and may the force be with you. My name is Christine Aiken. I recently became a staff writer for The Preface and have enjoyed the experience thoroughly thus far. I hope you all have equal sentiments about my writing, both in past issues and in the future.
As my boyfriend likes to say in jest, I am not from here. I was born and raised in Ohio, and after high school, I spent thirteen years in Pennsylvania. After deciding I wasn’t satisfied with the direction my life was headed and it was time I re-invented myself, I moved to South Bend.
Why South Bend? Primarily because my employer has a branch located in Mishawaka and the team I work on is virtual so I knew several people in the area, even if from a distance. I knew I could have a fresh start and not be completely alone in the process.
It was not easy to wrap my head around going back to school after close to a fifteen year absence, but I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am a speech communication major with a minor in graphic design. I am the vice president of the Communication Club and I also write for Aspire Magazine.
I am a self-professed word nerd, a Whovian, a clothing hoarder and I do not believe in owning too many pairs of boots. One of my favorite activities outside of school is karaoke, which is how I met my boyfriend. I will never again tell anyone you can’t meet your soul mate at a bar. Also, I enjoy this fun little game called Cards Against Humanity. You may have heard of it.
I hope my experience writing at IUSB will provide me the opportunities I have been looking for as a writer. The decision to write was one I made at the tender age of twelve and I have never wavered from that being my ultimate goal.
To end with my favorite Doctor Who quote, “We’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?”
