How would you like to take the trip of a lifetime exploring significant and historic European cities while earning college credit at the same time? The IUSB office of International Programs has several overseas programs available, and there is still time to apply.
One of these programs includes a trip to Berlin and Prague, where students will spend two weeks exploring museums, historical sites and monuments in the capital cities of the Czech Republic and Germany.
“Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe – the castle, the city center and the old town are magnificent,” said Lisa Zwicker, director of international programs. “Berlin also has beautiful museums and cutting-edge art, cuisine, fashion and nightlife.”
The Berlin/Prague program lets students get outside of the conventional classroom and use the cities as their textbooks.
“Each day students will meet together in the morning and talk about the plans for the day,” Zwicker said. “Then we visit a museum, historical site or monument, and explore it during the morning and early afternoon. In the later afternoon students meet again together to discuss with the group,”
While study abroad programs are a way to satisfy general education requirements, students tend to come back having gained a lot more than the planned curriculum.
“Students often think ‘I’ll learn about Mexico, or Berlin, or Costa Rica,’ but then they come away understanding their own culture and themselves in greater depth,” Zwicker said.
All majors are welcome to apply to the study abroad programs, and there are no language requirements.
“It is important to remember that even though some students may have previous experience with speaking a language when going to a country abroad, there is absolutely no language requirement for these IUSB study abroad trips,” said Madelyn Kindig, vice president of the German Club.
Program costs range between $2500-$4730 plus tuition for the credit hours, which range from three to six credit hours per program. Financial aid and scholarship money is available to help students offset the cost, and all IUSB scholarship money as well as grants and loans can go toward the trips.
“Money should not be something that scares you when considering going on a study abroad program,” Kindig said.

• Berlin/Prague, “History and Literature”: Deadline Friday, Jan. 31
• Costa Rica, “Health Promotion and Disease Prevention”: Deadline Monday, March 3
• Florence, “Painting and Drawing”: Deadline Monday, Feb. 24
• Mexico, “Language and Culture”: Deadline Thursday, March 20.

I studied in Prague as an undergraduate and in Berlin as a graduate student. Both of those cities are wonderful! I highly recommend studying abroad for all students. It is worth every penny! It will change your life!
