CORRECTION NOTICE: The original version of this article, which appeared in print on Feb. 19 and on this website until Feb. 25, contained an error. It stated that the SGA had voted to deny a funding request by the Student Nurses Association, but the SGA tabled the request to revisit it at their Feb. 21 meeting. The request was denied at the Feb. 21 meeting, with seven senators voting against the request and five senators voting in favor. Paragraphs 4 and 5 have been edited to reflect that the request was tabled, not voted on. The headline has been changed to say “SGA discusses”, rather than “SGA votes on.”

During their Feb. 14 meeting, senators of the Student Government Association revisited a funding request from the Student Nurses’ Association. Since spring 2023, nursing students have attended national SNA conferences. SGA approved their proposal last year; this year, they expressed concern over the excessive amount, which would take 22% of their programming budget.
SNA President Nicole Pudlo explained the $10,426 request, which included lodging, food, fees and travel expenses for the Seattle conference in April.
Based on the SNA’s calculations after sending out a survey, six students would attend the conference. Pudlo explained that it would be beneficial for the graduating students to network with other colleges and hospitals and to share the knowledge from the conference with other students.
During discussion, Senator Grace Leffert said, “They will be working in healthcare, and they are the future healthcare providers in our country. They should be funded to attend this conference; it would not benefit just six students but rather benefit many nursing students on our campus.”
The senate voted to table the request for further consideration, postponing the vote until their next meeting.
SGA also voted on LSU, BSU and ISO’s proposal to have Chicago-based comedian Ruben Ramirez visit Campus on Feb. 27 for a comedy show. They approved the organizations for up to $692.
The SGA meets every Friday from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in SAC 225. Meetings are public and students are encouraged to attend.
