As a student at IU South Bend, I think it’s important to know the resources available to me with my tuition. I’m sure most of our readers are aware of the access they have to free counseling, but did you know that there are more than just the services advertised, like Microsoft 365, all over campus that are available to you as a student?
In my first semester here, I was editing a video for one of my media classes using Adobe Premiere Pro on a library computer. Someone came up and asked how I was editing it. This person was a senior and had no idea that as a student of IU, we are given access to the Adobe Creative Cloud for free. I explained that all he had to do was download the Adobe Creative Cloud app and log in with his IU email and password to access the entire Adobe suite.
This means that we, as students, can use Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects and Firefly plus a few more Adobe programs for free on virtually any computer on campus as long as we are enrolled at IU.
If you’ve gone semesters or years without knowing any of this, don’t feel bad, because you’re not alone. In fact, I think most students don’t know about this.
On top of Adobe applications, students can access a wide variety of services through IUAnyWare (iuanyware.iu.edu), including the entire Microsoft Office suite, modeling software and myriad coding and data analytics programs.
There are also entire studios that you can use if you sign up for them, like the video studio in Wiekamp where you can use a camera and a green screen under staff supervision, and the three music studios in Northside that any student can use if they attend an orientation to learn the equipment and are supervised while in the studio.
Even everyday resources fly under the radar, like the 3D printing lab and oversize printing available in Education and Arts and free access to the gym, track, cardio deck and courts in the Student Activities Center (just don’t forget your CrimsonCard).
Needless to say, college is supposed to be more than just a place for you to learn – it’s a place that gives you access to the resources you need not just to be knowledgeable in your field, but to put that knowledge into practice. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of as many opportunities and resources as you can while you’re here, because you’re paying for it (and once you graduate, you’re on your own)!
