Originality abounded in ‘Potato Prints,’ a quirky event by the Fine Arts Club on Oct. 29. The workshop that allowed students to learn about the printmaking arts with an unconventional tool: potatoes.
The event was held in the Fine Arts building, where students were taken through carving potatoes into unique stamps and painting them to create images. Using these personally made stamps, colorful prints were realized, showing their own style and design imagination.
Bill Tourtillotte, senior lecturer in printmaking and adviser to the Fine Arts Club, reinforced the significance of such activities.
“We wanted to allow students to come together and work with each other in any artistic expression,” Tourtillotte said. “This way, it develops not only artistic expression but a network among those who may be alienated at some point working independently.”
Participants reported not only the enjoyment of hands-on experience but also insights from art students who shared their creative journey and also the value of collaboration in the arts.
“We want to encourage ongoing creativity and support for one another,” Susan Moore, Fine Arts department chair, said. “We hope to continue building a vibrant arts community here at IU South Bend.”
