The Titan Pep Band, founded this month by Megan Redmon, is an ensemble that aims to instill school pride and community among students, especially by performing at basketball games.
The band is open to any student who has a musical background, regardless of their current ensemble participation. Those interested in joining must have basic music reading abilities, but there are few requirements to join.
The ensemble’s primary objectives include promoting IU South Bend athletic events and creating an energetic atmosphere for both the performers and the audience. The Titan Pep Band hopes to add music into the game-day environment to make it more exciting and participatory for students.
At the helm is music education major Megan Kay Redmon, playing flute and piccolo, who will assist in conducting the group with Treasurer Spencer Berg. Redmon drew her inspiration from the dynamic pep band at Portage High School, with which she played for several basketball games. After realising there wasn’t such a group at IU South Bend, she reached out to her peers to gauge interest in creating one.
“This band is about creating an outlet for students to support our school and our teams,” Redmon said. “It’s community and pride for IU South Bend.”
Redmon said she is grateful for the opportunity, which will help her grow in her pursuit of music education.
“I believe that starting this club can prepare me and others in so many ways for a future career as a music teacher. The outcome of this band is to bring together students, here at IU South Bend, in many ways to show our gratitude for the arts and sports,” she said.
