This week’s Student Government Association meeting was short and sweet, mostly touching on internal housekeeping business and events.
Vice President Saleh chose Mariem Boussaha as this week’s senator shout-out. Senator Boussaha is a part of the philanthropy committee. She was chosen for her dedication to the SGA and willingness to help others.
Housing Liaison Jesuri Vazquez and Advisor Scott Strittmatter both spoke on the incident near housing on Oct. 12, in which a gun went off and a non-IU affiliated person was injured. Advisor Strittmatter confirmed that there was no active threat to students, and thanks to the IU Police Department’s quick response, everything was able to be handled quickly and effectively.
He also recommended for students to download the app RAVE Guardian, which allows students to get ahold of IUPD through the app, as well for them to save the number for IUPD into their phone. IUPD can be reached at 574-520-4239, but in the case of an emergency, reach out to 911. Advisor Strittmatter concluded by stating, “If something feels hinky, give a call, trust your gut”.
Vice Chancellor of Student Engagement Kory Vitangeli announced that the current dean of students, Laura Harlow, will be stepping down, as she has received an opportunity elsewhere. Her last day will be Nov. 1, and a reception will be held for her on Oct. 30.
The Diversity and Inclusion Committee reminded everyone that they will be holding a Latin Dance on Nov. 14 in the Grill from 5-7 p.m. Additionally, it was mentioned that Honors will be teaming up with the ADP to host “Critical Thinking in Voting Season” during which a guest speaker will talk about how one can steer through the chaos and think for themselves during election season. More information will be posted to Titan Atlas.
The SGA meets every Friday from 10 a.m. to noon in SAC 206 or 225. Meetings are open to the public, and students are encouraged to attend.
