Trick-or-treating has been around since the 16th century. Every year on Oct. 31, children dress up in costumes and go door to door collecting candy. As Halloween draws nearer and nearer, I ask the question: are we too old to trick-or-treat?
I, along with many other college students, love dressing up for Halloween. It’s my favorite time of the year, and it’s really fun to pick out a costume to wear for the festivities. I also, however, like to go trick-or-treating. It was always one of the highlights of the year, even if it (more often than not) ended up snowing. But, as a first-year college student, I’m asking myself: should I go this year? Should you go this year?
In my opinion: yes. I don’t think we are “too old” to have fun – and come on, is anybody too old for free candy? If you want to go put together a costume and go out and collect candy, I think you should. If young adults are respectful and don’t take more candy than any other trick-or-treater, there’s no reason they shouldn’t participate in the festivities.
This brings me to another point – most of today’s modern horror movies (think Scream, Saw, Friday the 13th, Halloween) are rated “R”, so couldn’t one argue that Halloween is meant for adults anyways? Wouldn’t that make trick-or-treating okay for adults to do as well?
Also, if parents are going to walk their kids around for hours collecting candy, I think they should be allowed to get some too. My dad used to take my brother and I trick-or-treating, and because he would also wear costumes, a lot of the people handing out candy offered him some as well. It’s not really about age at all – it’s about spreading happiness and joy for the holidays.
Trick-or-treating isn’t for everyone, so if you want to have a party or buy your own candy and stay in and watch a movie that’s great. However, if you do want to go out and get some free candy, don’t be too scared to do so because of your age. If you are embarrassed, Spirit Halloween has a giant selection of masks to choose from!
