IU South Bend is looking for a coordinator for the CUBE, or Center for Understanding, Belonging and Experiences.
This will be a physical space located on the first floor in the Administration building in what is currently the Alumni room, near other support services. It will be geared towards students involved in the various affinity groups on campus, including clubs based on culture, religion and identity.
There is not yet a fully concrete idea of what the CUBE will be and what it will provide, but this is because the space will be almost entirely student-driven. Students will be able to present any programming, features or offerings they feel would be beneficial to the future coordinator for consideration.
Laura Harlow, dean of students, is looking for a coordinator for this space right now.
“We began reviewing resumes last month, moved forward with first round interviews of candidates, and now we have our four finalists who are coming to campus,” she said.
Harlow said the most important thing they are looking for in a coordinator is a student-centered approach and someone who will be approachable but effective in helping put together whatever programming students might be interested in.
By the time of publication, this interview process will have already gone a few steps further, with the candidates (some internal, some external) having taken the time to talk to students about what they might want or expect from the CUBE.
Some ideas proposed already have been a clothing closet and a reflection room for religious or otherwise spiritual students to use for prayer.
“We are just so excited for the CUBE. I mean, it’s something that we’ve all been really passionate about, so we’re just excited that we have the money now and the time, the space to be able to do this,” Harlow explained. “We want to encourage students to please be active and aware in the coming months, because we are looking for feedback for this project, so if they see anything like focus groups or having pizza with the coordinator, we want to really encourage them to participate.”
