For conscious consumers who like to support their four-legged friends, Resale to the Rescue is a local nonprofit with a mission that might be for you. Resale to the Rescue is an upscale resale store that financially supports local animal welfare organizations. Located at 905 W McKinley Ave. in Mishawaka, the shop is less than a 10-minute drive from campus.
The store started eight years ago when friends Ann Rudasics and Jan Cardell joined forces to help animals in local shelters find homes and try to save them from euthanasia. Their goal is to help these organizations decrease euthanasia by increasing rates of neutering and spaying, increasing adoption rates for homeless animals and educating the community about animal welfare resources.
“All of our mission is to help the animals and lower the euthanasia rate,” Rudasics said. “I mean, it’s sad that perfectly good pets are being euthanized because there is no space.”
Their store sells all types of home items, clothing and other essentials for humans and pets alike. Of course, the store is pet friendly – buy your pet something in their “Petey’s Corner”, including leashes, bowls, kennels and more at an affordable price.
If you aren’t in the market for new-to-you goods, you can also donate or volunteer to support their mission. Resale to the Rescue accepts clean, working clothing, accessories, jewelry, housewares, furniture, linens and other items; children’s clothes, large appliances and computers are not accepted. More information about donation items is available at resaletotheresuce.org. The store also relies on volunteers to help with store operations.
Thomas Mills, a professor at Notre Dame who volunteers with Resale to the Rescue, said he refers his students to the store as a place to decorate their dorm room and save money.
“It’s great,” Mills said. “I tell my students here, when they are setting up their apartment, that they don’t need to spend a lot of money.”
There are many sales and discounts that they have during the week they are open that can help you save more.
