Taylor Stevanson, CommunityHealth Education major and president of Alpha Sigma Tau, explained that this sorority group is agroup of girls that value women, friendship and connection above all else.The history around sororities goes back to the early 1700 when a secret society of women gottogether, forming secret messages, handshakes and languages to speak to one another. Thiscreated a type of personal connection among the girls; a bond connected and concrete. Stevensonfound Alpha Sigma Tau in a hard place in her life, but can proudly say that these sorority sistershave created a safe, friendly environment in which she can thrive.Alpha Sigma Tau has even allowed Stevanson to find her intended major and career course. Theacronym GRICE is built on their core values of graciousness, respect, intellectual connectionsand excellence. Stevanson explains that they try to not only empower women here on campus,but in all aspects of their life journey.Not only do they provide a place for girls to bond and make friends, but Alpha Sigma Tau alsosponsors community service events. Stevenson explained that members must complete 10 hoursof community service each semester, such as their fall semester “Painting and Prevention”suicide awareness event, their “Party with a Purpose” making menstrual products for women inMalawi, “Take Back the Night” during sexual assault awareness month, food bank volunteeringand cancer walks.Become a sister by applying to their google form on Instagram @alphasigmatau_iusb or throughtheir vice president of recruitment, Rylee Floyd. My goal is to find the best way to empower women, to help them ignite the spark that willgrow confidence and achieve goals far beyond college.”
